Episode 62: Alesha Washington
Ohio native Alesha Washington has lived in Seattle for two years. For the CEO of the Seattle Foundation, that’s already long enough to make the city feel like home and provide her with ample proof that the Seattle Freeze is more myth than reality. And that’s a great thing when your organization’s role is to create greater equity and opportunity in all areas of a vibrant and healthy city. Jon and Alesha discuss the changing role of community foundations; her vision and priorities for the Seattle Foundation; the importance of joy in her approach to leadership and more. Join us for Seattle City Makers with Jon Scholes and guest Alesha Washington.

Well said!
P R O M O S M 😴
This is an old interview, from 2021.
The last time I went to Seattle was several years ago. I was going to Cross Cut Hardwoods on Harbor Island to buy two sheets of cabinet grade plywood. I came from the north down I-5 until stalled traffic forced me off at 65th Ave North and I headed over to 15th ave NW. I followed 15th down to the water front but work on the new sea wall led me into a series of detours until I ended up in west Seattle and having to head back east. There was a lot of work and detours heading east as well. I finally turned south thinking I'd be able to get to Cross Cut but it just headed me south to a mile or two of tents and broken down RV's. I finally got to Cross Cut and got my plywood. It took me more than 3 hours to get from Arlington to Cross Cut Hardwoods. The plywood was a little over $200.00 but it was nice, a good grade for the new kitchen cabinets I was making. A week later I got two letters from the Seattle police department. One was a warning that while on Harbor Island I had driven in the wrong lane. However I remember that section of road. There were road work signs propped up on the side of the road telling me to be in the EXACT lane that I got into. Apparently your cameras are not told about road work and changes to traffic flow that go along with such work. The next letter was a red light camera ticket for $195.00. The interesting thing about the red light camera companies, both out of Texas, is that when they put them in, the cities are forced to reduce the duration of the yellow light in order to get enough people running the red light to be profitable. I saw an article where a city was having more accidents and lengthened the yellow lights and the red light camera companies told those cities that if they didn't shorten the yellow lights again that they would pull their cameras. Obviously red light cameras have nothing to do with safety and are flagrantly about clipping drivers for $195.00 all day long, even telling the drivers that, if they pay it, it won't go on their driving record in order to entice them not to fight such a horribly wrong headed program. I don't go to Seattle anymore unless I absolutely cannot avoid it. It is a petty and vindictive town devoid of the warmth and friendliness they claim to be full of. Seattle Sucks and it sucks really bad. Have a nice day! I am, but then, I'm not in Seattle.
good job
In the middle of a MALL😅😂🎉
I love you big sis!! Keep up the hard work!
Maria - You rock!
Love you Maria
The Ambassadors are crucial to downtown. Whenever you cross paths with an Ambassador greet them with a smile and thank them for everything they do for our downtown neighborhoods.
Exceptionally done Joy!
Maria is amazing 😊
Atleast the toy was removed from the can
I agree with you 100%. I lived in and around Vegas, where it's sunny 364 1/2 days a year for 8 years and the people there (locals) in general are not happy people at all. On the flip side I've lived in Seattle for over 10 years where coming across a miserable person is beyond rare. Seattle is full of very optimistic and very happy people.
LOVE IT… but please get rid of the homeless
Newsflash: Sun does make people Happy. Maybe trying seeing it sometime
You should try something else, what you're doing in Seattle clearly isn't working.
The horrible year The view of downtown Seattle 2020
Just turn it into a smart city. Where everyone owns nothing and is happy.............
Start by removing the criminals and finding the homeless a place to stay.
What a joke
We are very excited to be a small part of these improvements! Can't wait to see it all come together!
that looks bussin
This is going to be amazing.
That's what art is in Seattle? And you're proud of it? Basically placing a gumball of microbes, bacteria and who knows what viruses, even herpes, on a wall until it becomes a huge pile of gumwall? Like, nuh, that's now what we should praise as humanity. Exposure to microbes is good, improves your defences, metabolism etc. until there's just so much of it that it's f'in dangerous to walk by. 0/10
I love you so much Dwight!! Best uncle ever❤❤❤ I’m so so so proud of you!!
I'm so grateful to work with you and to have watched you come so far. I'm proud of you my friend and have the utmost love and respect for you.
❤ awesome job Thank you all! You make a huge difference in our community and you are so appreciated 💕
I'm so proud of you. You've got me awestruck, Dwight. As you know, I actually live in the MID, and you're so near, yet a world away. And what you're doing is an awesome thing. It is a valuable and beneficial position that's just SO RIGHT. Isn't it? Being there to connect people, to solve problems, and....bring some back to life, if that's what they need. I do believe there is nothing you CAN NOT do! And I have often thought of you as a superhero. Hey, Dwight Wiskerchen. I am so glad to have known you all these years. And through it all, you've always kept me on my toes! Before this, you had already taken on the world in nearly every arena in which. it can be taken... And it is an inspiration to me, personally, to see someone actually doing that thing we love to do (helping those in need) and doing it so well. Countless conversations come to mind in which nearly all of our mutual friends and acquaintances have expressed admiration for what you are doing. Don't think you haven't inspired someone who had been, for the most part, lost and meandering, still trying to find a path in life. And you're making a difference, too. And it's made a difference in you. A wonderful remarkable difference. You truly are an inspiration to my life, my friend. Your words in that announcement said it all.
Way to go brother. Im proud of you
Add flowers everywhere.
😓 "Promosm"
I love everything the ambassadors do for downtown. I always joke with them about "leaf season". I have been told that the priority is the drains and the curbs. Would love a push message to property owners that they can also pick up the leaves on the sidewalk in front of their buildings.
It’s really sad that you didn’t mention the construction worker that died during the creation of the building. May he forever rest in peace 💔
Love this! What a beautiful city we live in.
Awesome I love it up there. But before I get started having fun in the city, where is the bathroom?
Can we fix 3rd Avenue? All my favorite places are gone!
My home ♥ ... now all we need is some night life. STAY UP LATE WITH ME SEATTLE.
Well done Ramon, keep grinding. Respect to the Downtown Ambassadors. Glad to see the guy at :49s is still out reading paperbacks and panhandling. Tried for years to get him inside and employed but he did not want it!
This building is absolutely gorgeous. First thing I noticed getting here was how it went up. So unique!
Where's all the bums and insane people screaming and yelling. Where are the tents?
It isn't the same after the pandemic....it is worse.
Great video 👍 Nice way to lead 🎉
now he gave them a new surface
Hey Jesse! This brings my heart joy seeing you share your pride! Keep rocking it! Sending love and blessings! 💕
Good stuff Jesse!!! Well done
Jesse you make coming to work a true joy everyday I feel blessed to have you as a good friend and coworker !
That'll be hit again before it's even dry😂
